Recreational marijuana is now legalized in California, but what does that mean for you? Our Learn page is designed to help get you up to speed on the basics and a little more. How much can you carry? How potent is it? What’s the difference between a cannabinoid and a terpene? You can find all those answers here.

Here’s a quick and handy guide to a few of the most popular cannabis product categories, their effects and the typical ways they are used.

Loose Flower

The most popular form of cannabis, loose flower comes in a variety of strains from which to choose. The “sugar leaf” of a cannabis plant refers to the crystallized, often sticky buds of the marijuana plant that are harvested then consumed in a variety of marijuana products. Although some people enjoy cooking or baking with loose flower, it is usually smoked either in rolled paper, out of a pipe or bong.

Packaged and Pre-Roll

Package marijuana can take many forms. In California, loose flower comes already prepackaged according to its weight. Pre-rolls, commonly referred to as “joints”, are loose flower that have been professionally rolled and is ready to smoke. The size of most pre-rolls is substantial and may last more than one session. Pre-rolls are probably the most convenient way to smoke cannabis and may be sold in single-stick packages or larger packs. The effects of smoking marijuana happen rather quickly for most people, and although the high may only last for a relatively short period of time it is usually different than the high from edibles.

Edibles are typically cannabis infused products that are consumed orally. Some of the more common forms of edibles that you will see include gummies, baked goods, hard candies, chocolates, pretzels, beverages and more. Edibles tend to have stronger and longer lasting effects than marijuana that has been smoked. The effects can take up to two hours to appear and can last for several more. The best advice is to always dose low to start with and increase gradually over time as you become more familiar with edibles.

Vaping devices are used to vaporize the active ingredients of cannabis, allowing you to inhale the cannabis discreetly, exhaling only vapor (not smoke) which generally has very little detectable smell. Most vape cartridges come in a variety of strains, some also have flavors. Vape pens and cartridges are usually sold separately, allowing you to customize your vaping experience. Keep in mind, however, that vape cartridges from one brand may not fit others. Ask your knowledgeable professional in our store for helpful advice on which ones to choose.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in marijuana. It is known to be an anti-inflammatory agent that is said to be more effective than aspirin in relieving pain. Some even claim that it works as well as prescription pain relieving drugs, but without the harmful side effects. CBD has properties that may relieve convulsions, inflammation, anxiety and nausea as well as potentially inhibiting certain types of cancer cell growth. It is one of at least 113 cannabinoids defined within the cannabis realm. CBD does not have significant psychoactive effects such as those caused by tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. Many people use certain types of CBD for sexual arousal or sleep. Depending on the mood, that is.

The marijuana concentrate is any type of cannabis product that is refined from flowers into a more purified and potent form. The concentrate can refer to just about any form of hashish (a.k.a. “hash”), kief, or hash oil. You may also hear it referred to as “shatter” or “wax”. These more potent forms of cannabis have become extremely popular in both the medical and recreational communities. Just a reminder that concentrates are exactly what they say they are: concentrated. Usually, concentrates are for more experienced cannabis enthusiasts. Think of it as the cannabis equivalent of a Black Diamond run in skiing; definitely not for beginners.
